A circumhorizontal arc or rainbow fire is an atmospheric optical phenomenon shaped like a rainbow halo but differs in that it shorter, thicker and is a not caused by the refraction of light in water droplets but though ice crystals in cirrus clouds.
It occurs only when the sun is high in the sky at least 58° above the horizon and can only occur in the presence of cirrus clouds. Therefore it can not be observed at higher latitudes 55° except occasionally from mountains.
The phenomenon is quite rare bacause the ice crystals must be aligned horizontally to refract the high sun.
A circumhorizontal arc can be confused with a infralateral arc when the sun is high in the sky; the first is always oriented horizontally while the latter is intended as a section of a rainbow, such as arc stretching above the horizon.
